Blow It Out.

I'll admit something to you...
but just you, internet.

I only wash my hair once a week.

I know... crazy.

My hair is super thick
(like, it's shocking)
and washing/blow drying/straightening it
is a three hour ordeal
from start to finish.

And the London humidity makes
it not too oily or too dry.

(Airplanes and Texas are tough on it, admittedly.)

Since pedicures are really terrible in the UK,
don't include good massages (the best part!)
and are around £40,
I nevvvvver get them here.

But I do splurge ever couple of weeks
on getting my hair blown out.

In fact, I have a lady that comes to my house
and does my hair there...
for £25!

I can't lie...
it's one of my favorite things.

My hair gets done to perfection
in a third of the time it would take me to muck with it...

All while the baby naps
and I drink coffee watching Law & Order SVU
in my pajamas.

Worth every single Kate-Middleton-wannabe penny.

Now you know my guilty pleasure.

(Well, besides the carbs addiction, but you knew about that.)

 .    .    .

Everyone has their weakness.

Their thing they refuse to do...
whether it's splurging to have your dog walked,
having someone come dust & change your bed linens.
a personal trainer guide your workouts
or even paying for someone else to make & deliver your juice cleanse.

Everyone has a point where they just... don't.

So what's yours?

Spill it.

French Women Don't Get Facelifts.

Just last week,
Tyler & I were talking about
the wrinkles we've acquired
over the past year.

Whether it's getting older
(hello, 30, I see you, too!),
having a baby,
loosing a baby,
or a combination of them all-
for the first time,
I look in the mirror
and see someone noticeable older
looking back at me.

Tyler & I both poke at
our random grey hairs
and eye wrinkles
with fascination and shock.

But we don't really mind.

In fact, we both wear them proudly...

Somehow it would feel cheap
to have gone through life
without them...

So, here we sit,
at 31 (him) and nearly 30 (moi).

I've splurged on some fancy skin cream
to slow down the process,
but at the same time-
it's made me start to think
about what it means to age
and how I feel about it.

And guess what?

I feel good about it.
I like the idea of being 40... 50... 60-
and not just that,
I like the idea of looking like that, too.

I don't want to always pretend like I'm 21...
or dress like that.

(Somehow I should toss in a not-Forever-21-line,
but I'm lazy and... well, you get the jist anyway.)

As we discussed what it meant
to own our ages,
I told Tyler I'll be happy to be 40...
"but a French forty."

Because somehow French women act their age
while also looking completely relevant & attractive.

So with this topic on my mind,
I was really excited to see
that this book is out.

This is the sequel to the famous
"Why French Women Don't Get Fat,"
Mireille Guiliano wrote a new book addressing
how women in France
balance ageing and beauty.

While I'm not committing
to 100% of everything Giuliano says,
I think there is something really beautiful
(and normal!)
about owning your age.

(Book available here.)

*  *  *

Here are some highlights from the book
(via InStyle's clever review)
to give you a taste:

1. See the “you” now.
In order to “manage your aging,” Guiliano says it’s important to see yourself as you truly are now– on the inside and outside. Instead of living in the past and seeing the younger (and probably slimmer) you, Guiliano advises women to “stop kidding themselves” and starting seeing the you now.
In her signature tell-it-like-it-is tone, Guiliano writes: “Realistically projecting, assessing the options, then shaping what we can and should be doing during the various later stages of life’s road is the powerful mental medicine that can cure some of our ills and enhance our pleasures through life.”
“Certainly in France, a woman in her forties and fifties is still alluring and seen as an object of desire and acts the part. She feels it and acts it, but doesn’t pretend she is ageless.”
2. Think like a French woman.
What we really love about French Women Don’t Get Facelifts is Guiliano’s ability to make aging gracefully seem fun and easy. It’s clear that Guiliano enjoys life and living it to the fullest. In her book, she encourages women to do the same by adopting a French woman’s attitude. She writes: “And French women, if they are anything, are individualistic in how they present themselves. Their outer package is infused with inner style and beauty and an ‘I don’t give a damn posture (which half the time they don’t, but they still dress to buy the morning’s baguette).’”
3. A little goes a long way.
Throughout Guiliano’s book, she reminds us of the ineffectiveness of crash-dieting and extreme cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts. In a why-torture-yourself tone, Guiliano talks about the importance of daily activity that’s not necessarily strenuous, the power of a great haircut, dressing your age, having the right shoes, and other lifestyle adjustments to make as you grow older.
“Through your decades you can evolve with the times without losing your established identity,” she writes. “You can refresh your brand without going for a complete makeover and attempting to become some new person. That’s a bit like a crash diet, and such diets don’t work.”
4. Listen to your body.
Guiliano also stresses the importance of recognizing the “five-pound alert.” She says that if you don’t take action after gaining five pounds, then you will just keep gaining and it will become harder to lose the weight. Guiliano’s secret to maintaining consistent numbers on the scale lies in her dietary choices. In one chapter called, “An Anti-Aging Food Prescription,” Guiliano includes 15 recipes that she says have been part of her nutritional plan since her fifties, and some recipes since much earlier.
 5. Attitude is key.
At the end of the day, Guiliano believes attitude is most effective in appearing and feeling younger. Referring to attitude as a “magic pill” to looking younger, Guiliano says French women approach aging with a different mindset than women from most cultures, and that is what makes the difference – not grooming, clothing, nutrition or face and skin care. It is attitude, she says.
And along with this anti-aging attitude come two elements that save us in life. Guiliano writes: “…according to Indian journalist and novelist Tarun J. Tejpal, [they are] love and laughter. If you have one of the two, all is well. If you have both, you are invincible. Now there’s an attitude.”

In The Hot Seat

Can I ask you a question?

Am I the only person who doesn't have "someone"
that always does their hair?

I just can't rely on ANYONE to consistently do a good job with my hair
and it leaves me waiting upwards of a year each time
I need to cut my hair.

And I'm at this point again.

My last hair cut was May 2011.

I'm starting to look like Stevie Nicks.

I don't need anything fancy...
I just want someone that can consistently control my fro.

So if you are one of "those people"
who have long-term relationships with a hairdresser,
where/how/what did you do to find them?

{Londoners- any help?}

Does anyone else suffer from reoccurring trauma caused by the styling seat?

Winning Silver

A lot people call me lucky.

I'd just say I'm a shamelessly vigilant opportunist.

Like when Ana Pettus posted a giveaway last year
for goods over $1000 of swanky beauty goods,
I stalked it was a matter of national security.

And I won.

So am I lucky?

Or do I just have too much time on my hands?

Probably a little bit of both.

Amidst the box full of Chanel nail polish & lipsticks,
at home micro-dermabrasion & cellulite therapy kits,
there was this.

Now in my past life in Dallas,
I worked with a store who sold COR.

Our buyer gave me a sample of it at the trade show in New York
the day he initially stumbled upon their booth.

I think I threw it away in my hotel room later that night
because I didn't really want to bother with a little soap sample.

The store brought in a shipment
and I started seeing celebrity reviews on this little orb of love
that is made of actual silver
which delivers fantastic anti-bacterial elements
to help clear your complexion and fight anti-aging.

So when I found this giant-sized version in the box from Ana
I knew it was something special...
I mean, it costs £100.

At that price, you'd expect it to be made of gold... or silver.

I was unpacking some boxes last night and found it once again.
Never used, still in the original box.

I decided it was time to try it out
this little La Mer of facial soaps.

And I actually do LOVE it.
My skin feels great
and felt really tight afterwards.
Gotta reduce those pore sizes, baby!

So one day in-
I think it's a winner,
but time will tell.

In the meantime,
I'll just have to take Sarah Jessica Parker & Jessica Biel's endorsed word on it.

Have you ever tried COR?
Or have you ever heard of soap this expensive? :)

Sk-In The Know

Having good skin has always been a bit of a struggle for me.

If I'm honest, it's because I've typically been too lazy to take the time
to take off my make-up & wash my face before bed.

So basically, I wanted great skin without doing anything.

Which, obviously, didn't work.

Last year, my friend Julie forwarded me Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP issue
on her favorite finds from French Pharmacies.

I was planning to go to Marseilles later that month for work,
so I jotted down a list on my phone,
& scooped up a few items when I was there.

Then a few weeks later, the craziest thing started happening:
my skin started to clear up.

Weird, I know.
Who knew face products, when used, actually could do stuff?

I got a little addicted to the idea of not having flaky skin
and patches of oiliness & build-up,
so I started getting into the whole idea.

A year later,
I'm a full out believer
that if you take care of your skin,
it can actually look pretty nice.

I've added a few other things since my trip to France...
my bathroom shelf now includes a few more things
that make my skin look great today
and will, hopefully, help it looks its best in the years to come!

susan posnick colorflo | avene eau thermal | chanel uv essentiel | bioderma makeup remover | caudalie cabernet face scrub

The one thing I have yet to find is a good night cream.

I know, I know... "La Mer!"
But you guys, it is SO expensive.
Surely there is something just as good
that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars?

Or is is really just THAT good?

Tell me what you think below, I'd love your input!

A Bit of Bubbly.

The next two weeks involve a bit of hotel hopping for us.

We were in London last night,
in Birmingham tonight,
back to London tomorrow night,
parked in Paris for several days,
& then bouncing to a different hotel
throughout Southern France
each night for a week.

While I might estimate that 14% of my waking hours
are spent packing, re-packing & lugging heavy bags around the earth,

I know, I know...
Not a single one of you feels sorry for me.

And I'm not asking you to, either.
The truth is relaxation is always close at hand.

Well, assuming that we have a bath tub in our hotel room.

Because when that is the case,
I'll spend my night soaking
and singing along to my iTunes playlists.

Since hotel amenities can be hit or miss
I always pack my own.

{Yeah, I'm talking to you, crappy bar of soap.}

Taking a soak in this bath oil makes me feel like a princess.
I originally got it at Regent Tweet with Helena
and am about to restock my dwindling stash.

These bubbles are gorgeous.
The pistachio scent is what I soak in
when I'm primping to get fancy.

My mom loves Molton Brown products,
and always makes sure her daughters are supplied.
This particular scent is crisp & feminine.

Soap that is packaged like this...
and that smells like blood oranges?
If you don't want one based off those two factors,
you aren't my people.

Well, okay,
obviously you're still my people.

You know I wouldn't pull the plug on our friendship over something that silly.

*PS. We stayed in the Thistle, Hyde Park last night.
We found a great deal on lastminute for £99 per night,
and were very pleased with it... especially that marble bath tub.

While we're on the subject...

After seeing lips all over Paris
{see my post from earlier today}...

I've been thinking about it.

I'm not a lipstick stain kinda gal
because I don't ever wear lipstick.

I'm pretty loyal to lipgloss,
but it seems that some people stick to the stick.

What's the appeal?

I love lipstick packaging,
and could be sold on swapping out...

but I'm just curious how you
don't prefer the coverage of
 good, shiny, lipgloss!

Not to be dramatic...

... but Laura Mercier is on Gilt Groupe today.

And I'm going little crazy.

I've never understood why
the cosmetic industry is exempt
from marking their merchandise down?

Every single other industry has sales...

how do they get away with continuous full price?

I still have no clue.

Either way...
we can snag the low prices today.

Like now.

Go!

PS. Have you noticed how much I love this site?

Nooooey.... This is bad.

Have you seen the new ads for Rimmel London?

Pretty Zooey Deschanel has been contorted beyond recognition...
which breaks my heart,
because I really love her simple style.

which caused a twitter backlash from the starlet.

{This is getting awkward...}

What do you think?

love it, she looks beautiful in both!

why wouldn't I? she looks normal?

or

are you one of the thousands of indie girls crying across the world?

Band Together

After much thought and consideration,
I have decided...

that I'm more of a Blair
than I am a Serena.

Maybe it's just the dark hair,
but I can relate.

I can especially relate to her headbands.

I love a good headband,
and Blair Waldorf wears one well.

It's like her subtle tiara
on the Upper East Side.

Sometimes I need to indulge
my inner Gossip Girl
with a gorgeous headband
a la Blair Waldorf.

I always seem to head to the same places....

where it all began...

N's selection has grown to be quite impressive...

{who knows brat teen culture better?}

*XOXO to the CW for letting me borrow these images.

Making Out Like a Bandit...

There is little that I love more
than getting something for free.

If I can't get them for free,
I also love getting things
really, really, really
cheap.

Which is why I am
a shamless nut

This morning, I will be
shopping my heart out on the
Laura Mercier Sale.

It brings out the crazy lady in me.

I can't help myself.

When the morning sales start,
I'm like a kiddie on an
Easter Egg Hunt.

Get outta my way, people.

If aren't currently a member,
I dare you to try it & resist.

You can use my invitation from me to join.
But beware:
Gilt Groupe shopping is highly addictive!
