In some ways,
2013 was really similar to the others.

Lots of travel, London & mushy talk...

Yet, also different.

Babies were added.
A baby was lost.

Our hearts shattered.
Our heart grew bigger than we ever imagined.

But mainly,
our lives were made so much better.

(Thanks, Viola.)

Thanks for being a part of this year.

Welcome to the next chapter
of our crazy adventure.

Christmas Card | 2013

To each one of my readers,
who I humbly consider my friends...

Thank you for all you have done
to make this year more than bearable...
but making it wonderful for us
in so many ways.

I hope that 2014 brings joy and light-heartedness
to your family...  and ours, too.

And if it doesn't...
well,
He is still good.

Our love,
Tyler,  Lauren & Viola

English vs American: Mince Pies

My grandpa used to love mince meat pies.

(mince meat pies = disgusting concoction having actual meat in it)

I used to gag seeing it.

To this day, I have absolutely no clue
what it was he was actually eating.

He passed away a few years before we moved to England,
or I was totally ask him to explain it to me.

And then I'd probably give him a really hard time about it
and he would laugh until his dentures would start to slide out of place.

So cute.

Then we moved to England.

Our first Christmas,
I politely passed at their tiny pastries
that were frequently offered
and internally judged their affinity
towards meat-laced pies.

The second year we were here,
I started to suspect I was missing something.

So one brave day,
I bought a pretty one
covered with a simply shortcrust start
and dusted with powdered sugar
and... well, I loved it.

Especially since
THERE WAS NO MEAT IN IT.

What?
What is a mincemeat pie then?

Check out my friend, Will, of Bright.Bazaar's great tutorial here.

The best way that I can explain it is
that it is like an apple pie...
without any apple.

Not all are amazing,
but you can score some really tasty ones
during the Christmas season in England.

So there.

Now you're a little smarter
and a bit more prepared
to not miss out on this delicious holiday treat.

Do mince pies make your holiday line up?
Or do you pass on for peppermint bark?

le vendredi noir

Since Britain doesn't really have Thanksgiving
(I know, shocker, right?)...
there isn't really a "Black Friday" to follow.

Except if you have access to
ye olde world wide web
and can shop the sales
from your nifty computers.

I, honestly, haven't thought
for a second
about Christmas gifts this year.

I don't know what I really want
nor do I have any clue
what I want to give to people.

But man...
with deals like today,
it's hard not to get cracking.

Even if there wasn't an ocean
separating me from the shopping madness,
I would never head out to shop today.

But browsing online...
at home...
looking all terrible and bloated
after our Thanksgiving dinner last night?

Well, sure.

I'll play the Christmas elf
and share some of the sales I'm most excited about:

( 75% on selected items like my Logan Square diaper bag- $129!)

(25% everything + 7AM door busters. Use code: GOBBLE)
You can also find an amazing Black Friday list of handmade retailers here on their blog.

(Free shipping on tons of flash sales. I bought these baby tights for $10)

(Pretty much 10%- No codes needed!)

( 30% | use code: HOLIDAY)

(I'm a sucker for cheap DVDs.)

What about you?

Do you brave the madness of shopping on Black Friday
and I guess, contribute to it, also?

Or do you hang around home
and play your odds with what's available online?

a good year: my addiction to wine.

The holidays are the perfect time
for writing cards expressing sentiment,
picking out the perfect gift for your loved ones,
baking a beloved family recipe...
and, of course, wine.

image via

Whether it's mulled wine in a Christmas market,
sparkling wine toasting to the year at close, or
for many people, as the cure for too much time
spent up close & personal
with relatives you'd rather not be related to...

But this year,
can I suggest it
as the antidote for
a humbug holiday attire instead?

Thanks,
because that's exactly
what I'm about to do.

My crush on this wine-stained obsession
started when I bought (via ebay)
my first pair of Lanvin flats.

Since then,
it seems to be popping out at me
at every flick of the magazine page.

It just seems perfect for this time of year...
paired with glittery gold accents
or muted with a toned-down olive or camel,
it's just a good staple to have in your closet
for the winter months ahead.

Before your head starts to get fuzzy
from all this wine babble,
let me just leave it with some quick pics.

... and I'll finish my Ocado food order
for our Thanksgiving lunch tomorrow.

Happy (7)th of July!

Blame it on the timezones...
but today, we had a street party
to celebrate the American Independence.

(Also known as the 4th of July,
but since we were a bit late
we can just call it the former.)

My friends, Lolly & Tyler,
hosted us in theird adorable tiny street
(or "mews" as it would be called here in England)
which is so cute
that Posh & Becks decided to make the house on the end
their London residence.

No, they didn't join the rest of the street...
but they were invited and David was apparently bummed to miss.

Can you even imagine what I would have done
if Harper & Viola were playdates at a BBQ?

I'll tell you exactly what I would have done:
I would have peed my pants.

Even though the glam squad wasn't there to party with us,
we still had a pretty rocking time.

So I'll tell you what I want,
what I really, really want....

This gorgeous necklace!

During the party,
Viola & I tucked inside to play for a bit in the indoors.

While I was falling pretty hard
for their exceptionally cute flat,
Viola felt so inspired she leaned up on the couch
like a champ to observe the festivities below.

So while it may not be Cape Cod,
it sure was this Aspiring Kennedy's dream way
to celebrate the Fourth... or the Seventh.

Whatever.

I hope you all are having a great day
where ever it is you may be...
and that you have as much sunshine
as we are expecting this week in Blighty!

If You Love Someone... Make Them These Banana Bars

Monday night, my southern roots were in full form
as I hosted a Valentine's Day Cookie Exchange.

Each invitee brought 2 dozen homemade cookies
and by the time everyone had arrived and gotten cozy,
it looked like we had landed ourselves
inside some fantasy land of a seven year old.

We were up to our ears in cookies...
it was glorious!

I'm typically someone who would not try to do a practice run on a recipe.

My instinct is to just wing it
and, normally, things turn out okay.

But this weekend,
I decided-
what the heck,
I'm as big as a house
and am not in the mood to go anywhere...
so I made a batch of these Biscoff Blondies.

Ugh.

They were so marginal and boring...
and while I'm really glad that I didn't offer them to my guests,
it left me in a bit of a panic on Monday afternoon
to find a replacement.

I needed something easy to make
that didn't require a proper mixer....
because my Kitchenaid doesn't live in London.

{It lives in a pile of dust in my parent's attic
along with all of my crystal, china & other pretty things.}

My blood tests the night before showed that my potassium levels were running high
and so I realized that this might be the perfect way to use up the bananas
that I was no longer allowed to eat.

Voila!

I now present to you a DELICIOUS recipe
that is soooo easy to make
and the ingredients are really cheap.

{I always hate shelling out £20 for ingredients for baked goods.
Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of making them at home?}

I think these probably took about 5-7 minutes
from beginning to oven.

The frosting might have added another 5 minutes at the end.

Honestly, this recipe is a winner
and would be an easy thing to whip up tonight
to give to someone you love tomorrow.

{Besides, you most likely have 99% of these ingredients in your kitchen already.}

BARS:
1 cup sugar
2 mashed bananas
2 eggs
1/3 c vegetable oil
1 c flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt

FROSTING:
1 regular pack of (light) cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup of butter
2 cups powdered sugar
splash of vanilla

METHOD:
Preheat your oven to 350.
Mix the bananas, sugar, eggs & oil together in a bowl until it's a nice yellow, sloppy mix.
Stir in remaining ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon & salt).
Pour into greased pan (9x13) and put into oven for 25-30 minutes...
or until a knife/toothpick comes out clean when inserted from the center.
Leave to cool for one hour.
Now is great time to toss the cream cheese & butter out on the counter to soften.

After you've run an errand, eaten some lunch or watched a little tv
while the banana bars cool,
come back to the kitchen and start on the frosting.
Mix all four ingredients in a bowl.
You can beat by hand or in a mixer... both will be yummy.

Spread on the cooled bars & cut into 6x4 rows.
Eat your heart out.

Mmm...

Wouldn't you feel loved if someone made you these?

Oh yeah.

Pack Your Bags: The Holidays in London

While the holidays might be officially over,
I wanted to pen down some of the highlights of our Christmas in London
in case you ever find yourself in London during this magical time of the year.

We hosted my family of 16 people!
Adults, kids, infants...
we had the whole crew!

Entertaining for a crowd that size wasn't too difficult
as London offers so much to do in December....
but, in case you find yourself traveling through London at Christmas,
here are our favorites!

****

Christmas Eve Carol Service at Westminster Abbey

This is a special service that Westminster Abbey hosts every Christmas Eve.

The service will include the choir singing classic carols,
members of the Royal Household staff reading scripture lessons,
and various portions of the service where the audience sings carols by candlelight.

It's gorgeous... and free.

Though while it is free, you MUST HAVE A TICKET to get in.

You apply/register for tickets (max 4 per person registering) in November
through the Westminster Abbey website.

{Editor's Note: You'll need to check with the WA site to see when the sign-up date is, as it changes yearly. Set a reminder on your calendar and sign up that day to insure your tickets.}

If you live out of London,
you can go to the Abbey's office adjacent to the church a few days before
and collect them then by showing them a valid ID.

(My dad & brother did this and it took about 5 minutes. Easy!)

The carol service lasts about one hour
and I highly recommend getting there early to secure good seats...
especially if you are traveling with an entourage (like we were)
and would like to sit together.

Winter Wonderland- Hyde Park Christmas Market

If you are in London in December,
please don't miss out on this special celebration.

We have gone to Winter Wonderland for three years,
and it is always a highlight of the "festive season" for us.

Imagine a giant carnival (of State Fair proportions)
with food & gift stalls from a German Christmas market
transported to the middle of Hyde Park.

It's free to get into
and you can wander the stalls selling trinkets
and delicious German treats like
roasted potatoes, bratwurst, mulled wine, and the like.

Kids will have a great time
with the rides and performers...
and adults can enjoy the larger scale rides
and warm adult beverages.

It's such a blast!

Daily Christmas Carols in Trafalgar Square

Admittedly, this can be hit or miss
depending on what groups are singing when you arrive...
however, most of the groups represent local charities
and trying to raise support for good causes.

The backdrop of the carols can make the journey worth it..,
and if the group really isn't that great,
just wait about 30 minutes until the next group shows up.

These are held each evening
from mid-December until Christmas.

Go after dinner with a cup of hot tea!

More information available here.

Skating at Somerset House

While London offers many gorgeous settings to ice skate,
I have to say-
Somerset House is the best I know.

The rink is larger than most of the other rinks,
Somerset House makes for a perfect setting,
it has a separate area for little skaters,
it has a really decent "lodge" tent stocked with hot cocoa & treats...
and I'm particularly smitten with the staff there
who offered to take my (partially paralyzed) niece around the rink
so that she could enjoy the feeling of skating.

We were all blown away watching them skate around with her
and holding her up so she could pretend to move that fast on her own.

It was such a sweet & generous showing of the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Tea at Fortnum & Mason

Having afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason on Christmas Eve
with the ladies in my family was practically perfect.

For the more mature attendees,
we opted for the Traditional Afternoon Tea
which includes posh options like Welsh Rarebit, Lobster Omelettes & Haddock Soufflés
to arrive before the traditional silver trays of scones & cakes.

For the younger members of our parties,
gorgeous tiered trays were brought for their pleasure
holding little sandwiches, tiny scones & Christmas treats
like mince pies, jam cookies & decorated cupcakes.

Oh, and of course- they had the traditional blue F&M teapots
full of apple & orange juice
to accompany their meal. :)

Since "afternoon tea" offers such heavy portions,
I recommend going closer to noon for your booking.

You won't need to eat before arriving to tea
(nor should you... you would explode!),
and bookings will be more available at this time
during such a highly coveted day of the year.

Christmas Shopping

I know this sounds a little silly and obvious,
but few cities dress up for Christmas at London...
and the majority of these holiday displays
are made magical at the larger retail fronts of the city.

Landmark shops like Liberty of London, Harrods & Selfridges
doll up with elaborate lights and windows...
and walking through their halls and departments is so much fun.

We were getting obnoxious.

Plan on spending a few hours
walking down Oxford Street & Regent Street
for the full effect...
but don't plan to be alone.

The streets are crowded,
so grab a hot drink from Starbucks
and make the most of it.

***

So there you have it...
not the complete list,
but definitely a good starting point
for planning your holidays in London.

Other good resources I would use are:

2012- An (Aspiring) Year in Review

Only a few more hours left here in England
until 2013 makes its way into our lives
and 2012 is gone for good.

{Except for our facebook timeline & Instagram feeds.}

Isn't it funny how certain years stand out in our minds as good, solid years...
while some years are just so miserable
you can't wait to lock them up and forget about them completely?

I hope that 2012 hasn't been one of those years for you,
but if it has- have hope!

Life is good
and better days will be back soon.

I love using this blog to record what is going on in our lives.

In the midst of chaos,
it helps to have an outlet to journal what all we do & what we see...
and it also helps me remember what all happened.

{Sometimes I'm fairly certain I have the memory of a golden retriever.}

So here we go...
the highlights of 2012-
a year that I am happy to pack away
with good thoughts and fond memories.

That line up makes me tired just reading.

When I see it in writing, I realize just how much traveling we actually do...
which works out well, since we love it & my job requires it.

Who knows what 2013 will bring for us,
but I know that regardless of it is the same or different,
it's going to be good.

Happy New Years Eve!

I'll catch you on the flip side... but until then,
what's been a highlight of 2012 for you?
