Ash Wednesday

I've never participated in Lent,
but since it's more commonly observed
here in England...
 I'm jumping in on the action.

I'm picking sweets...
{which I've noticed is a common thing for girls?}

Starting today,
I'm parting ways
with my sugary little habit.

{Until Easter, when all the good candy goes on clearance.}

Are you giving anything up for Lent?
Have you before? Or are you a first timer, too?

  1. good for you!

    I'm giving up sweets and facebook. I toyed with coffee but almost died at the thought!

    40 days isn't THAT long right...?

  2. Good luck with that, darling!!
    The hardest thing for me to give up would be coffee... but I simply can't do it!

  3. My husband & I started a tradition last year- for every dollar we spend on entertainment (going out to a movie, out to a nice dinner, etc.) we will donate that same amount to a charity. I never really participated in Lent when I was little, but I like that this gives back to a good cause. Plus no crazy sugar cravings!!!!!

    Good luck! Its sometimes just nice to see that you can give up your vices!

  4. One year I gave up sweets, another no wine. This year I am giving up other things in exchange for an addition, a new kitchen...so I feel like I have a bit of a sacrifice to make daily to get to the final finished project.

I seriously need to start drinking water so maybe I'll do a juice/coffee/tea swap and drink water instead- hum?? Anyhoo...happy day to you and will send you positive 'I don't want any stinky candy anyway' thoughts your way;) xo

  8. I used to give up something for lent when I worked and the entire rest of my department was Catholic! I've done sweets, I've done alcohol (that was really cheating because I was pregnant & not drinking anyway) and I've done potato chips - a particular weakness. Haven't decided yet - have a few hours left I guess.

  9. I gave up chocolate last year, which was seriously difficult considering there's a bowl of peanut butter M&Ms about 10ft from my desk at work, and a constant flow of donut parades in the break room. BUT it was totally worth it, after 6 weeks I felt completely detoxed and I had even lost a couple of pounds I had packed on over Christmas ;) So I'm doing chocolate again this year, but I think the hardest part for me is the whole "no meat on Fridays" thing, I always remember halfway through my turkey sandwich :)

  10. i had peeps for the first time about a year ago. i always preferred the reeses egg. but i can proudly say i am glad they pretty much offer peeps all year round now with every holiday. but i love me some easter peeps. im not sure why it took me so long to try them. that would be pretty hard for me to give up. my mom is catholic but i was baptised non-denom.

  12. Sweets and snacks.
    I had a big farewell piece of lemon pie last night.
    A little self-sacrifice is good.

  13. Sweets are a good choice, esp if you are addicted : ) I am giving up carbonated beverages and giving the money I would have spent on them to my church at the end of the 40 days. Good luck to you!

  14. i was raised catholic so i have a long history with lent (giving up meat on fridays and on ash wednesday) and usually sweets. last year i gave up swearing, and if i let one slip i would have to donate $1 to a charity. i might do that one again..if my wallet can afford it. good luck!

  15. Good morning from Tokyo!

    I'm a Catholic Christian so Lent has been part of my family's religious practicies since before I was born. I, too, am relinquishing the sweet things in life, but I'm also intentionally devoting more time to prayer. I haven't spent enough time listening and need to work on focuing on that.

    My best to you and yours...

    Warmly,

    Elizabeth

  16. I'm not religious, but I love the challenge of giving something up for 40 days. Last year I gave up wine, that was a tough one. This year I'm giving up clothes & shoe shopping! Good luck everyone, stay strong!

  17. While I don't participate in lent, I have fasted several times en route to a breakthrough. One time it was sweets and man was that hard! I've also fasted TV before, at a time when there were a lot of good shows on at once which was hard considering my hubby was here at the time and did watch, I had to avoid that side of the house. LOL.

    Good luck and good attitude, yes all the candy will be on clearance then!!

  18. girl, the beautiful thing about lent is that you give that thing up for 40 days of lent -- that is, monday through saturday. every sunday is for enjoying it -- rejoicing in the Lord and being thankful. indulge on sundays!
