Sk-In The Know

Having good skin has always been a bit of a struggle for me.

If I'm honest, it's because I've typically been too lazy to take the time
to take off my make-up & wash my face before bed.

So basically, I wanted great skin without doing anything.

Which, obviously, didn't work.

Last year, my friend Julie forwarded me Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP issue
on her favorite finds from French Pharmacies.

I was planning to go to Marseilles later that month for work,
so I jotted down a list on my phone,
& scooped up a few items when I was there.

Then a few weeks later, the craziest thing started happening:
my skin started to clear up.

Weird, I know.
Who knew face products, when used, actually could do stuff?

I got a little addicted to the idea of not having flaky skin
and patches of oiliness & build-up,
so I started getting into the whole idea.

A year later,
I'm a full out believer
that if you take care of your skin,
it can actually look pretty nice.

I've added a few other things since my trip to France...
my bathroom shelf now includes a few more things
that make my skin look great today
and will, hopefully, help it looks its best in the years to come!

The one thing I have yet to find is a good night cream.

I know, I know... "La Mer!"
But you guys, it is SO expensive.
Surely there is something just as good
that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars?

Or is is really just THAT good?

Tell me what you think below, I'd love your input!

  1. Oh man, I never wash my face at night so I don't know any good night cream. Although, I DO use a sunscreen with Pro-Retinol A everyday. I've heard coconut oil on the face makes it glow like none other, but I have yet to try it. I always thought you had great skin so obviously whatever you're doing is great.

  3. I have just invested in Clarisonic and I would really recommend it !! It makes your face creams sink in so much better and is like having a mini facial everyday!

  4. la mer is THAT good, I actually used it for a long time and then switched to Rodin oil but I really want to start using La mer again, at least at night, thank God pay day is almost here!!!
I would love to get a Clarisonic like Rachie says, but Im scared my skin won't tolerate it so for now I'm leaving it out.
Welcome back!! dinner?? can do any day but wednesday and friday and weekend (mom is here) or next week! xxx

  5. Hello, as a woman on the fast lane to 40 I feel that I have the credentials to pipe up, here: first thing: I cannot recommend the ClarisImpact highly enough! The product itself is overpriced but it works. Secondly, since tiring of paying crazy sums of money for products that are later revealed to be more harmful to the body than they are good, I have ditched all expensive face creams for 100% Organic Argan Oil which I use morning & night and it works!

  6. Ditto on the clarisonic mia. It has changed my skin for the better. You have to ease into it. Every other day, then gradually to every day. Use your bioderma to take your makeup off and then use something gentle on the clarisonic brush (I switch between olay sensitive skin foaming face wash and cetaphil). It really is that great.
I use a very light moisturizer at night from Juice Beauty (the oil free one). It's about $30 a bottle and lasts for months. It's not a deep moisturizer, but it's great for summertime. Maybe you could use that and try the La Mer just on a few of your drier spots to make it last longer. I've never tried La Mer though. I've used Olay Night cream in the winter. It's good enough for me.
My other thought is maybe something from Clarins? I used to use their products a long time ago and loved them. May be worth asking for a sample at a cosmetics counter.

  7. I used a Boots rose night lotion for a couple years (I found it at Target) and loved it. It wasn't too heavy, and it felt amazing.

I have super sensitive skin and several years ago, a doc told me to only use plain Dove soap on my skin (because it's more lotion than soap). My skin has never been better, and if I'm out of town or try something new on my face, I always regret it.

  8. First off, I am obsessed with your website! Secondly, I use Cetaphil for my face in morning and night, as I'm a nurse and it's all the doctors prescribe for our patients for any skin care whatsoever, even on their skin post radiation burns. It's gentle, makes your skin feel fresh and clean, and no residue. It's also the only thing that doesn't break me out. For night cream, Oil of Olay Regenerist Night Cream (in the dark red/burgundy tub) is AMAZING. It's got the thick, smooth cream like La Mer but for only around $30 bucks. It makes my skin shine, and it's anti-aging so I can get a jump start ...at 24 lol.

  9. Not sure if it's sold in the UK, but Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream is the best. Really anything from the Kiehl's line.

  11. Great post! I wish I'd taken better care of my skin when I was younger! Mainly from the sun! I'm trying to make my daughter a believer of at least washing her make up off every night! She takes her gorgeous skin for granted at this point! Thanks for sharing!

  12. No fancy expensive moisturisers for me, it's all bunkum, especially La Mer, it's just all marketing.
Wear sunblock, use retina A when you're older.

  13. I have been lucky to have genetically good skin but I must get better at taking care of it. So I am always drawn to posts about skincare, need that little push! Main thing is sunblock and keeping the face out of the sun, sooo important, wish I told myself this when I was 20 with my johnsons baby oil at the beach...yikes!!
I think there are LOTS of creams, but one that is not expensive that everyone SWEARS by is Eucerin....I finally got hold of a place that ships to the U.S. and am waiting on it to arrive! I have read too many rave reviews and my friends dermatologist said its the best kept secret out there beyond things like botox, etc.........

  14. Have you tried Bio Oil? It's a bit of a leap of faith putting oil on your face at night, but it's AMAZING and you only need a teeny, tiny bit. Works on sunburn, dry skin and a load of other stuff (that's a technical term), too.

  15. I have heard from a trusted source that the Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler moisturizer is on par with La Mer but WAAAAAY cheaper. It's not available in the U.S. (have to have it shipped in), but it's available in France and under $50.

  16. I swear by Israeli Ahava products. I have very dry skin so I use night creams and moisturizers daily. The eye cream is my savior. It allows me to have the appearance that I get some sleep during the work week. Seriously though, the moisturizers and night creams are fantastic. You can order online and they offer discounts a lot. May have a harder time finding in UK stores, but worth looking.

  17. I have oily/combination skin and I love to use DHC deep cleansing oil to remove my makeup, followed by Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate. You will wake up to great skin!

  18. I just started using this St Ives cheap stuff...and so far I love it. Dr. Oz apparently says it's the best stuff on the market, and just as good as all the $$ products. I'm sold...and it's a huge tub for $6!! Can't beat that with a stick!

  19. I have a friend that swears by La Mer, but I can't fork over that kind of money. I use Clinique eye cream and a Korres night cream that I like a lot. I love trying new products though so I haven't exactly found one that I keep buying (except for the eye cream..all about eyes). Whenever older women are asked what they've done to keep their skin looking great they always reply "removing my makeup at night and washing my face every night". I'm getting better, but when I don't my skin will break out in a day.

  20. Ponds Cold Cream - my great-grandmother used it, my grandmothers uses it, my mom and now me. I just love the clean smell and it's very inexpensive. You can pick it up an any drugstore.

  25. Malheureusement, La Mer really IS that good. They make a lighter weight version that I really like. But like you, I find it horrifically expensive, so I let my mom buy it for me every now and then. :) Another favorite (although, erm, also expensive) is Bobbi Brown's Extra Repair Moisturizing Balm SPF 25 (http://www.sephora.com/extra-repair-moisturizing-balm-spf-25-P305143?om_mmc=Googlepla&_requestid=42976&cm_mmc=us_search-_-GG-_-pla-_-%7Bkeyword%7D&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=1404961). It's made for people w/ super dry skin (which I'm not super dry, really), but I find the weight to be perfect. Even in the heat of summer. I'm officially obsessed.

  26. Love me some new products! I have been loving the WONDERBAR for a couple of years now, great for traveling, and works wonders. For a night treatment I think pure coconut oil is amazing! Skin will feel so soft and it will not clog pores!
