Rome Again, Rome Again... Jiggity Jig

Is "Home again, Home again, Jiggity Jig" an actual phrase...
or did my mother just make it up as something to say
when we would pull into the driveway upon returning home from a trip?

As I type this, I think it must be the latter.

More Rome pictures, if the first batch wasn't enough for you.

Do you know what is cool about traveling to these places
and posting about them here on my blog?

I get to see how it refreshes memories that each of you have
for different trips you have taken.

I love hearing about what you did,
what sweet people you met,
how you still long for a particular dish...

As someone who treasures those memories immensely,
I really love when you share yours with me.

I'd love to hear your favorite memory from Rome today,
or if you have yet to visit the "Eternal City,"
what you are dreaming of doing when you get there?

  3. My favorite memory from Rome was seeing the Pantheon. Jaw-droppingly beautiful! Well, that and the Vatican. Shoot...the whole city is a dream. And the gelato in the Piazza Navona. Drool. I wish we would have had more than just a day to spend there, but I"m sure we'll be back one day! Beautiful photos, as usual girl! :)

  5. So I know this is probably not a memory response you were hoping for but it's one of the strongest ones I have. My family is from northern Italy. For whatever reason southern and northern Italians have some...thoughts of each other (goes back to when Italy was establishing itself as a country but you didn't ask for a history lesson). So when we visited Rome we took my younger (male) cousin with us. I spent the entire trip giggling under my breath, he was just that ridiculous with pointing out differences in accents, food, anything you can think of.
It was also the first time my sister had been to Rome, so we went out and purchased a fancy (at the time) digital camera. What did we do? Forget it back at my Dad's house...a 6 hour train ride away from Rome. So all of our photos are from disposable cameras. Absolutely ridiculous, but somehow I think I remember the trip even better - maybe I was more consciously trying to ingrain all those memories knowing we would sub-par photos???

  6. haha my Grandma used to always say the same thing when we drove up to their house! Now I notice myself saying it sometimes!

Your photos remind me of HUF! I want to go back so bad. I was in the same group as Austin & your sister. We had such a wonderful time. Although I'm pretty sure everyone who goes to HUF has a wonderful time! My husband and I each went to HUF but in different groups so we can't wait to go back, but this time we'll get to go together.

I just love your pictures! Thank you for taking me on a stroll down memory lane.

  7. I have lots of great memories from Rome. But, my favorite was being at the Colosseum and watching a bride and groom taking pictures on their wedding day there. She was the MOST beautiful bride and exactly what you think of when thinking of a beautiful Italian woman. Can you imagine how awesome those wedding pictures were?
And of course I loved the whole throwing a coin into the Trevi fountain. That means I get to go back, right? Such a cliche thing to do, but I'm cool with that!

  8. i have lots of great memories from rome, but they tend to be overshadowed by the bad (my friends and i decided to stay up all night in the city before catching our flight out in the morning... and my purse was stolen, with passport and brand new spending cash inside. they ended up having to leave without me and i spent the rest of the day crying and wheeling my suitcase around looking for a hotel.) but that was just the end of the trip. we stayed in an amazing hostel with an outdoor patio/terrace, and made friends with the owner. he ended up taking us out for my friend's birthday to his favorite restaurant, where we paid a flat 20 euros for a family-style dinner with multiple courses and endless wine. it was amazing.

  10. My hearts swells as I look at these pictures!

I did a semester in Rome as a junior in college. Those four months were some of the best- surpassed only by those spent falling in love with my husband. One of my favorite memories is walking from our apartment by Campo di fiori along the river to the Vatican. About once a week I would take the journey to use the Vatican post office to mail postcards to friends and family. The sky was always the most beautiful, vibrant shade of blue. I can still picture it. Rome will always have a special place in my heart!

  11. That color blue on you is gorgeous. Sigh.

I've never been to Rome. The only things I want to do there is eat pizza, gelato, and ride a Vespa.

  12. I just returned from a two week trip to Rome and Palermo. I have two favorite memories from Rome. My husband and I were walking back to our apartment in Trastevere one evening and searching for dinner along the way. A small store front caught my eye because of the interesting art in the window. A lady came to the door and I asked for the menu. She explained the restaurant was a non profit cultural association and the menu changed daily. Our kind of place. When we stepped inside it felt like we were in someone's living room. There was a dog sitting in the corner and wing backed chairs around the tables. No one else was speaking English in the whole place (hard to find in Rome these days!) It was delicious. I can still taste the creamy homemade mozzarella. It was called Tidiro. The next day we tried to find the place again to take a picture. We never found it and joke that is was a figment of our imaginations!

My other favorite memory from Rome was visiting the Church of Sant'Ignazio Di Loyola. The paintings are amazing and truly look 3D. I visited this church before seeing the Sistine Chapel and there was no comparison. The Church of Sant Igazio Di Loyola is tops.

  13. I am BEYOND jealous of your time in Rome! I've been to Italy a few times, but to Roma only once. It was such an amazing experience (culturally, culinary, etc, etc.) but I have to say what I loved the best was the little hotel we stayed at. It was a small "hotel" if you could even call it that run by a nice little old man that barely spoke english so we usually just communicated with smiles and lots of nodding. It was steps from the coliseum and felt very authentically italian. If I ever go back theres not a chance I will be staying anywhere else!

  16. The first time I ever flew, I flew to Rome. By myself. I dropped my stuff at my room and headed out. It began to rain, so I ducked into the first building I saw. Just looked like a plain building, but when I went it, it was the most enormous church I'd ever seen. I began to laugh at the unbelievable size and beauty of it. I left, and a short old man offered (from what I understood) to walk me back to my hotel and held the old plaid umbrella over me the whole way. Amazing.

  22. Home again, Home again, jiggety jig is totally an actual phrase....at least my Dad said it every time we got home, which leads me to believe there had to be some TV show or something from their era where someone else coined the phrase! :)
I haven't been to Rome for almost 10 years now....right out of high school with no money to speak of....a group of 7 of us pooled our money to buy a large pizza with only cheese. Sad that I didn't get to enjoy the good food of Italy, but those were such great memories, just soaking everything in while backpacking and staying at campsites....not hostels, campsites! We even stayed up one whole night in Rome because we had nowhere to sleep.....if only my parents knew, surely they would have sent money, right?

  23. My mom and dad always say Home again, Home again, Jiggity, Jig. Maybe it's a parent thing.

Anyhoo, my first time in Rome was the summer between my sophomore and junior years of high school. We were there just 2 months before Sept. 11. Our time in Rome coincided with the G8 Summit in Genoa. There were a LOT of protests throughout the country. We were on our way to dinner one night and found ourselves in the middle of an angry protesting crowd, Italian police in riot gear, and a lot of CNN, BBC, and other news channel cameras. I'm pretty sure not a single one of us had any clue what was going on at the time, but in hindsight, it's pretty cool that we were literally in the middle of all the action. I'm sure there's news footage somewhere of a bunch of high school kids walking through the scene looking terribly confused.
