Taxi Cab Confessions: Paris Edition

I know, I know...
all this hype about moving to Paris
and then nothing but radio silence since I left.

C'est incroyable.

As much as I like to think this spring is all about
me frolicking down the Seine at my leisure
with a mille feuille in one hand
& a painfully heavy Chanel bag in the other...
the truth is...
I actually do have to work.

And work have I been doing!

All the little things that take forever when you move somewhere...
{but take infinity longer when you are in France}
cell phones, transit cards, bank accounts, tenancy issues.

Les plaisirs de France.

As I've been jutting around this gorgeous city
schlepping giant bags & newly acquired items like desktop printers,
it's been mainly in the back of a cab.

I've seen the Eiffel Tower about 16 times... through a car window.
I've idled along Ile St. Louis... in traffic.

While a taxi is the least romantic way to experience Paris, fear not:
I'll have plenty of time to strut this city this spring.

So while I'm out today
going back to the phone store on the Champs-Elysees
and heading to an Apple appointment at the Louvre...

Why don't you join me?

City of Brights

By the time the sleepy heads on the West Coast read this,
I'll be pulling out of St. Pancras Station
and waving "Bon Voyage" to crowds of confused bystanders.

And I'll be wearing this.

Dorothy Perkins, $89 | Kara Ross Earrings

Isn't it amazing?

But the truth is...
I actually won't be wearing either of these beauties.

In fact,
I'll be wearing a dress
I found on clearance at Gap yesterday for £4.65.

It's pretty cute, too, though.

Oh well,
I'll be happy with just one dream
coming true for today.

{You know, that one dream about moving to Paris.}

Au revoir, mes cheries!

A Bit of Bubbly.

The next two weeks involve a bit of hotel hopping for us.

We were in London last night,
in Birmingham tonight,
back to London tomorrow night,
parked in Paris for several days,
& then bouncing to a different hotel
throughout Southern France
each night for a week.

While I might estimate that 14% of my waking hours
are spent packing, re-packing & lugging heavy bags around the earth,

I know, I know...
Not a single one of you feels sorry for me.

And I'm not asking you to, either.
The truth is relaxation is always close at hand.

Well, assuming that we have a bath tub in our hotel room.

Because when that is the case,
I'll spend my night soaking
and singing along to my iTunes playlists.

Since hotel amenities can be hit or miss
I always pack my own.

{Yeah, I'm talking to you, crappy bar of soap.}

Taking a soak in this bath oil makes me feel like a princess.
I originally got it at Regent Tweet with Helena
and am about to restock my dwindling stash.

These bubbles are gorgeous.
The pistachio scent is what I soak in
when I'm primping to get fancy.

My mom loves Molton Brown products,
and always makes sure her daughters are supplied.
This particular scent is crisp & feminine.

Soap that is packaged like this...
and that smells like blood oranges?
If you don't want one based off those two factors,
you aren't my people.

Well, okay,
obviously you're still my people.

You know I wouldn't pull the plug on our friendship over something that silly.

*PS. We stayed in the Thistle, Hyde Park last night.
We found a great deal on lastminute for £99 per night,
and were very pleased with it... especially that marble bath tub.

Monday Moods: I feel... off.

After one month in the US,
our bags are once again packed
and stuffed with the splendors
of Christmas morning & American retail prices.

Delicacies such as chile rellenos & fried okra
have made our jeans fit a bit tighter,
but the time with our loved ones has made our heart swell, too.

So as I anxiously await touching down in London
and moving on to a glorious stint in Paris,
I'm also saying goodbye to a few aspects of life
that I've been enjoying so much in the States.

Hunting through my mom family's abandoned grocery store for buried treasures. I found some good ones!

Roasting s'mores with family and watching Downton Abbey.

The retail craziness in the US. So much of everything... Is that 24 species of Pop-Tarts?

Decent burgers- because let's be honest: England kinda sucks at making burgers.

Spending time with my grandma...

And surprising her with dinner on her wedding china. (She wanted "spaghetti with a big glass of milk." ha!)

And of course, playing with my sweet niece. Good grief, I love that girl.

NYC 5th Anniversary Photo Shoot

While we were in New York
celebrating our fifth anniversary,
we had some pictures taken
by the one & only, Victoria Wall.

I wasn't feeling particularly photogenic that day.

We had been walking all day,
I had eaten two hot dogs & a piece of cake an hour before...
definitely not the pre-game routine a model would recommend.

I ditched the red dress bought especially for the occasion,
and defaulted to my daily uniform
of £4 black skinny jeans & a blazer.

Victoria met us at the hotel
walked us a couple of blocks
towards Bergdorfs & Central Park
and snapped sporadic shots along the way.

Did I have high hopes for how they would turn out?

Not really...
but when I got these in my inbox last night,
I learned an important lesson:
Never underestimate the skill of a good photographer.

What Michaelangelo could do to a hunk of marble,
so Victoria did with two tired lovebirds.

These shots capture the both of so well,
highlight the January weather that made our wedding so perfect,
and are a keepsake that we'll enjoy looking at through the years.

Grab Bag Winner

Attention, please.
Attention, please.

Ladies & Gentlemen...

Congratulations Katie for winning the giveaway.

I'll be shipping you
this Kate Spade cosmetic case from NYC,
this yellow scarf's twin from Oxford,
a tin of English candies,
some bright Indian bangles,
and a really cool Indian ashtray....
which I, a non-smoker, bought because it was so cool.

Thanks for all your love the past few days...
I really hope I didn't sound too dramatic.

Just as much as I love being connected to social media,
I value my rare face-time with people so much more...
and this was a good week to be logged off.

Thanks for all your kind words.
I think you are pretty awesome.

In Case of Emergency...

This blog will be left unattended.

I'm fine, Tyler's fine...
but some other people in our life aren't.

And while I love blogging,
I love these people even more.

Editor's Note: After re-reading this,
I want to clarify that nothing terrible has happened...
just a lot of little things to several people
that I feel I should take care of for now.

I'll be back in a day or two,
but for the meantime...

I need to fill my role
of friend & family
to some people I love dearly.

While I'm away,
I want to fill the void
by giving someone something nice.

For what?

Well, it's kind of a lot of stuff
that I've been collecting over the past year
while traveling here & there.

Things I meant to give as gifts
fron India, New York, London & elsewhere
that have instead become quite a pretty pile.

I think one of you might really love it.

And if you win it,
you'll get to see first hand
what exactly it is.

New York City: Part 2

This time last week,
I was frolicking down 5th Avenue
& gazing over sushi at my lover.

The streets were noisy and crowded
and we were constantly in tune
to the hum of the busy city.

Now I'm sitting on a musky lazy-boy
in the back room of my grandma's house
in Wichita, Kansas.

The only sound I hear is
the occasional rustle of plastic wrappers
as my grandma works her way
through a bag of Werther's and the stack of mail that just came in.

I kinda like both about the same.

But since I know you all have no affection
or nostalgia to this tiny house in Kansas,
let's talk about New York.

Specifically, let's talk about a few gems
that can make a weekend in NYC better.

THE HIGH LINE

Spend a morning in the sunshine
wandering along Manhattan's newest public space.
Wear your workout clothes and look like you are there for a reason.
Or opt for a blazer & a scarf with skulls on it
and meander lazily along it like me.

All types welcome.

I, especially, loved the views of the Empire State building
& the clean modern designs of the renovated tracks.

FLEA MARKETS

There are various parking lots & garages
that transform from the workweek parking
to busy flea markets over the weekend.

I like the ones around 25th Street...

Two floors of antiques
with finds ranging from glassware & plates
to vintage mirrors & team pennants.
Don't forget to bring cash.

BRUNCH AT TARTINE

This West Village spot is a favorite among locals...
and is an easy sell for visitors, too.

homemade brioche french toast with hash browns, bacon & oj. $15, tartine.

With it's laid back atmosphere
and classic NY brunch offerings
(eggs benedict, french toast, omelettes, etc.)
it's easy to overlook the short wait outside
and the feel like you've fallen on to a set of a 90's sitcom.

*If you want to go for dinner, it's BYOB
and is loved for opening your bottle & providing glasses
for curbside aperitifs while you wait on the street for a table.

THE DIAMOND DISTRICT

Tyler is a good man.

He bought me a new band for our 5th anniversary.
One to go with my wedding & engagement rings.
They make me feel like a lady.

My engagement ring is from this same shop, Golda.
My family has bought everything from them.
Their prices are crazy good, and we love the family that runs the store.

{I would love nothing more than to connect you with them. I love them!}

MERCER KITCHEN

This Soho spot was first introduced to my by my old boss
during our trips up to Manhattan for the trade shows.

I love Mercer Kitchen
The food is good, the lay out is pretty,
the macaroni & cheese makes me very happy,
and they take reservations.

GRAYS PAPAYA

The one hotdog I will eat in the world...
Well, actually... I eat *two* of them when we go.

$4.95 for the Recession Special
 {2 dogs & a drink.}

Don't skip the onion sauce.

Other good things:

Mario Batali's shrine to Italian foods.
Next time, I'm going with an appetite and with intentions to dine in the "Piazza"
where the center of the store becomes a hub for gourmet, Italian food.
The common food court has entered a Renaissance
and has been reborn into something awesome.

Best enjoyed in good weather,
this stand in Madison Square Park
can have lines that may intimidate you...
But the perfect burgers, crinkle-cut fries & glammed-out custard shakes
are more than worth the wait.

Order big when you get to the front as portions are small
and the crowds may not allow for seconds.

If you get in town late
and are hankering for something eat-
this gastropub is the perfect spot.

It serves food late, has great burgers, and huge bar...
One of Mario Batali's creations.

This place is hard to describe,
but it really is one of my favorite places in the city.
Think of PF Chang's cousin...
but it's smaller, indie, Malaysian cousin.

And if you go, please order the chili crab
and an order of the fried rice.

There are two locations, one in the Village
and one on the Upper West Side.
I do the latter, as they take reservations.

Another Batali creation
that I first discovered from my BFF, *Gwyneth.
It might be one of the hardest places I know of to get a table.
In fact, I kinda think only people like Gwynnie can get a table.

Opt for going at lunch to avoid the wait...
and try the Bucatini All'Amatriciana.

This place is just cool.
If you want to go to a hip place
that truly is like no other,
go here.

I like to take people here
when I want to try and look awesome.
It always works.
